AUDITION TIPS
Please download these files.
If you can, please use a phone or tablet to record your audition–external mics and cameras not necessary. If you must use a different setup, be sure that you test your audio beforehand and adjust levels so that it doesn’t distort.
Regardless of how you capture the audio, it must be unprocessed–no EQ, compression, reverb, or pitch correction of any kind. We want to hear you as you sound in the room.
You can choose to film it as one continuous video or each section separately.
BEFORE YOU START
FILMING YOUR AUDITION VIDEO
Step 1: Introduction
Say hello! Tell us your name, age, pronouns, voice part, and where you’re from.
Step 2: Solos
Singers of all voice parts: perform a short section of two contrasting solos, unaccompanied. No musical theatre or classical, please.
Step 3: Part Singing
Use the learning tracks and/or sheet music to learn the voice part that suits you best.
When you’re ready to film, play the “performance” track for your part from a secondary device in the room and sing along with it (your part will be missing from this track, you fill it in with your voice). Don’t use headphones, we want to hear your voice front and center with the performance track in the background. Memorization is not necessary.
Pay attention to the phrasing, dynamics, and inflections of the voices on the demo, and do your best to blend with them.
Step 4: Repeat After Me
This is a brand new addition to our audition! Play the track, listen to each phrase, and repeat it in whichever octave is most comfortable. We have different tracks for vocals and bass. Select one track to include in your audition.
Step 5: Scales
Sing along with our scale guides going up and down. Going up, sing “eee-ahh” and going down sing “yah yah yah yah yah” until you reach the end of your range.
Step 6: Miscellaneous Skills (optional)
Please show us any other skills not already covered, such as scatting, singing in other languages, instrument imitation, vocal impersonations, songwriting, arranging. You can include a short segment of preexisting audio or video (instruments, production, tuned vocals, etc. are ok for this section).
Step 7: Personal Statement
Briefly tell us why you’re interested in joining Academy Choir: Los Angeles!
AFTER You’VE FILMED
If you chose to film each section separately, edit your video together in order above. Capcut and iMovie are free and user friendly. You also have the option of filming it all together in one take and uploading the whole file.
Once complete, upload your audition video to YouTube. Be sure to set your video to “unlisted” or “public.” If you set it to “private” we will not be able to view it!
In the video description, please include timestamps for the start of each new section. This will help us navigate your audition seamlessly.
Once your video is uploaded and you have a link, you’re to fill out the:
